Black Lab - Room B

Overview

This week, a lot of progress was achieved on the design theory and asset identification portion of the creation process of the video game.

Initially, every table was to conduct research and create a question pool (with a How-To file per question) for a specific subject of the G.E.D requirements, such as reading, writing, mathematics, science, etc.

However, after careful consideration, it was concluded that due to mathematics being the most intimidating subject to teach at The Mustard Seed, the main focus of the game would instead be to teach the 27 lessons of mathematics from the G.E.D preparation manual. After a lab committee meeting to discuss the distribution of lessons, the following division of labor was devised:

Revised Distribution: Mathematics
B1: 1-5, B2: 6-10, B3: 11-15, B4:16-19, B5: 20-23, B6: 24-27

  1. Numbers and Operations
  2. Operations with Whole Numbers
  3. Steps for Solving Word Problems
  4. Steps for Solving Multi-Step Problems
  5. Introduction to Fractions
  6. Fractions, Ratios, and Proportion and Proportions
  7. Operations with Fractions
  8. Intro to Decimals
  9. Operations with Decimals
  10. Decimals and Fractions
  11. The meaning of Percent
  12. Solving Percent Problems
  13. Solving Percent Problems 2
  14. Measurement Systems
  15. Measuring Common Figures
  16. Measures of Central Tendency and Probability
  17. Tables, Charts, and Graphs
  18. Integers and Algebraic Expressions
  19. Equations
  20. Exponents and Roots
  21. Factoring and Inequalities
  22. The Coordinate Plane
  23. Applying Formulas
  24. Lines and Angles
  25. Triangles and Quadrilaterals
  26. Irregular Figures
  27. Working with Right Triangles

To Be Completed Next Week

- Completion of Familiarization Presentations
- Completion of graphical assets for game
- Begin programming the game
- Begin subject material content creation for the game
- Begin preliminary testing of individual components of the game

Table Progress

Topic: Lessons 16-19

Week of March 1st

This week, Team B4 concentrated on setting up the team contract and the division of work among group members. Team Contract is currently under development. Work on the familiarization presentation part of the project also began this week. The team was able to define the purpose and evaluate the Criteria required for our specific part of the project. As for next week, Completion of the Team Contract will be complete. We also hope to make substantial progress on our Familiarization Presentation and possibly begin work on the main part of the mustard seed project: The Game design.

Week of March 8th

This week Team B4 completed and turned in the team contract which outlines the purpose, decision making and teamwork of the Mustard Seed project. The lab decided instead to do just the math section of GED handbook instead of a particular subject. My team got sections 16-19 of the math section of the GED. We then proceeded to work on the Familiarization presentation. Parts were divided accordingly between group members. Alex and I will work on the Scope and Benchmarking section of the Familiarization Presentation, and Chris and Suraj will work on the Background and key players sections. During the Friday lab we were able to get some work done on our respective parts and will aim to complete the Familiarization Presentation by Tuesday 16th of March.

David's Group

Topic: Lessons 24-27

March 11th, 2010

After David presented the Game Design Theory and interface to the laboratory, effort was put forth to further completing research for the Familiarization Presentation. Roles were assigned based on three key areas:

1. Difficulties with learning Lessons 24-27
2. General learning issues in the field of mathematics, with focus on the homeless population
3. How to combat these issues

While Garrett, Ben, and Katie were focusing on the Familiarization Presentation, David was focused on how to divide the work package breakdown for the game design into tasks which could easily distributable, but more importantly easy to integrate together into a single, quality package.

March 12th, 2010

Garrett, Ben, and Katie continued researching material for the Familiarization Presentation while David focused on Flow Charting the Game Design, such as menus, interfaces, audio, and game-play. Game assets were also identified, such as what buttons needed to be created, and how many objects needed to be created for the game interface.

For the following week, the Familiarization Presentation will be completed, and construction of the game mechanics and interfaces will be underway. David hopes to complete the graphic portion of the game over the weekend, with programming to be completed the following weekend.

Gavin's Group

Topic: Lessons 20-23

March 11/12

We assigned the distribution of work load including topic distribution for the upcoming familiarization presentation. We all began working on our specific components of the presentation. We also discussed, if the game can have varrying looks and styles, the specific looks that we will be looking for. As well we discussed potential times that we could meet the following week to collaborate our components and generate the presentations.

For next week we will finish all of our research on our own time and then meet to create the actual presentation. The long lab next week will be take up mostly by the familiarization presentations. Any remaining time in the lab will be dedicated to getting a headstart on the question development process. As well the friday will be used to begin generating questions as well as solution guides.

Stephen's Group
Table: B1
Topic: Lessons 1-5
March 11th 2010,
We have assigned distribution of workload regarding upcoming Presentation. All of us are doing research in various areas but each have key point to cover in presentation. Stephen is doing Background (GED, Algebra, Geometry), and Statement of Project Goal(s). Jason: Design Specifics. Jessica: Key Players. Nathan: Research, and Benchmarking. Jason tested Algorithms in C#, which can be used in alternate environments. Discussed approaches to teaching basic Math principles and at what level of comprehension.

March 12th 2010,

Continued work on Familiarization Presentation. Because of Midterm on Tuesday, our meeting for Familiarization Presentation will be on Wednesday after Physics Tutorial. All group members our expected to have their portions completed by the meeting. Also e-mailed Salman Khan, creator of Khan Academy, about using his instructional videos as our means to teaching the Mustard Seed patrons.

Christine's Group
Table: B-2
Topic: Lessons 6-10

March 11th 2010

The group has divided the workload for the familiarization presentation. Our main topic for the Mustard Seed Challenge is from Lesson 6 through Lesson 10 of the General Education Development (GED) book. We have decided that in the familiarization Presentation Pamela and Mark will work on the Background and Key Players section and Danial and Christine will work on the Scope and Benchmarking section. This means that they will do as much research on the section and present it to the class. We will be meeting on Wednesday at 4:30PM after class; during this time we will be practicing our presentation to be fully prepared the day of the presentation.

March 12th 2010

The team's task for today during the 75 minute lab is to do research on our topics and prepare what needs to be said in the presentation. This way, we will be prepared to pratice our presentation during the team meeting on Wednesday, March 17th 2010.

Brandon's Group

Lab March 11th 2010,
We researched our assigned sections for the familiarization presentation. Decided to have a meeting to finalize everything for the familiarization presentation on Wednesday. For next week we hope to have our tasks assigned for the functionality report and begin work on designing our section of the game.

Lab March 12th 2010,

We continued work on the familiarization report. The task packages for the Functionality Report were distributed. Meeting set for Wednesday is still on and everyone is expected to have there portion ready for the familiarization presentation.
